How to Make an Apple Watch Cake

When it comes to making 3D cakes, I absolutely love taking on the exciting challenges they bring. Cake, you see, is an amazing canvas that lets us create all sorts of objects, bring our favorite movie and cartoon characters to life, and much more. The idea for this fantastic Apple Watch Cake actually came from my fiancé.

He’s a big fan of Apple, and he thought it would be really cool to make a cake that looks just like the Apple Watch. At first, I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. But as I thought about how to make this cake, I came up with a simple way to do it.

This Apple Watch cake will truly amaze anyone who sees it, and the best part is, it’s not as complicated as it might seem. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through each step, showing you how to create your very own Apple Watch Cake. So, if you’re still curious and ready to get started, let’s begin this fun and creative journey!

What you’ll need:

Tools:

  • 2 Layers of Sheet Cake
  • 32 oz of buttercream or 32 oz of Ganache
  • Carving Knife
  • Poster Board
  • Print of the Apple Watch
  • 16 X 16 inch cake board
  • Fondant
  • Balling tool
  • Letter and Number Cutters
  • Circle Plungers
  • Fondant Rotary Cutter
  • Xacto Knife
  • Icing Spatula

Step 1: Create Your Apple Watch Cake Template

Start by creating a template for your Apple Watch cake. Print out a big picture of the real Apple Watch. Once you have this picture, carefully cut out the watch’s shape. Put it on a piece of poster board and trace around it.

After that, use a sharp Xacto Knife to cut along the traced outline of the Apple Watch on the poster board. Now you have a clear template of the Apple Watch, which will be your guide when you’re shaping the cake. Keep in mind that the size of your template might change depending on how many people you want to serve, so you might need to adjust the size of the printed Apple Watch picture accordingly.

Step 2: Sculpting the Cake

Before you start carving the cake, make sure it has been thoroughly frozen overnight. This step is important because it helps you create a cake with well-defined edges and a precise shape. Place the Apple Watch template on the cake, align it carefully, and then begin the carving process.

For the central watch face, carve out two small rectangular sections underneath the watch face on both sides of the cake. These carved areas will act as slots where you’ll later attach each watch band under the watch face. This careful carving technique is essential for achieving the authentic look of the Apple Watch. As you may know, the watch band smoothly fits into the actual watch face, creating a seamlessly rounded edge effect.

Step 3: Applying the Crumb Coat

After you’ve finished the detailed carving, the next important step is to put on the crumb coat. This serves two purposes: it keeps the cake moist and strengthens its edges, making sure it stays sturdy when you cover it with fondant.

For the crumb coat, it’s best to use a thick and stable buttercream. This kind of buttercream sticks well and forms a protective layer that gets the cake ready for the fondant. Alternatively, you can use ganache for the crumb coat. It creates a solid surface, making it easier to get sharp edges and a perfectly smooth finish once you add the fondant.

By using these methods, you’ll create a strong base for your beautifully decorated cake.

Step 4: Fondant Dressing

When crafting your Apple Watch Cake, approach the task of covering each component of the watch individually with fondant. It’s essential to meticulously smooth out every surface and side to achieve that sleek and Apple Watch-worthy appearance.

Once each piece of cake has been elegantly enveloped in fondant, it’s time to assemble the cake components, bringing your delectable Apple Watch creation to life.

Step 5: Creating the Watch Band Details

Let’s start by making the details for the watch band, a unique part of the Apple Watch. For the longer part of the band, use a small tool called a Balling Tool to make the tiny holes that give it a special appearance.

Now, focus on the other end of the watch band. Carefully use a small knife to carve out an oval-shaped opening where the real watch band will smoothly slide in and lock securely with a small piece of fondant.

To create this small fondant piece, shape a tiny bit of fondant into a small cylinder and trim both ends to make it neat. Let this little fondant piece sit and dry for about 15-30 minutes.

While the small fondant piece is drying, shape another piece of fondant into a little ball. Once both pieces have dried properly, put them together. This forms the important part that securely holds the Apple Watch Band in place, adding an authentic touch to your cake’s design.

Step 6: Crafting the Apple Watch Screen

Now, let’s move on to creating the Apple Watch Screen, a vital part that gives your cake its unique character. I’ve gone with this specific watch face, which shows the activity rings and a clear clock. I like it because it helps me keep track of my daily activities, especially when I’m working out, and its simple design makes it easy to read.

But feel free to let your creativity run wild and pick any watch face that you like. The Apple Watch offers a bunch of choices, so don’t hesitate to explore your creative ideas and design something truly special. If you’re feeling extra creative, you can even paint a picture or use edible printing to feature someone’s face on the watch. This personal touch can make a lovely surprise for a birthday or special occasions like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

To make the activity rings on the watch face, I used small circle cutters. I started by cutting out a big circle, and then I used a smaller circle cutter to take out a smaller circle from it. This way, I could use the ring-shaped piece left after cutting both circles. For the numbers on the clock, I used letter and number cutters to carefully cut out the ones I needed to decorate the watch face.

Step 7: Assembling the Pieces

Now that all the cake parts are decorated, including the watch face and both bands, it’s time to assemble them neatly on the cake board.

Hooray! You’ve successfully crafted your very own Apple Watch Cake!

I believe you’ve not only learned new cake carving and template-making skills but also had a great time doing it. This cake is perfect for Apple fans, tech lovers, and anyone who really likes the Apple Watch.
